Some Background Information: The Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R) is the 650-mile route from Newport RI to Yorktown VA down which in the summer of 1781 some 4,000 French troops under Gen. Jean-Baptiste de Rochambeau and some 2,500 U.S. Continental troops under Gen. George Washington marched, hoping to end the Revolutionary War. In the Atlantic Ocean just outside the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay a French fleet under Admiral de Grasse beat off a British fleet in the largest naval battle of the American Revolution, -- involving 43 ships-of-the-line, one-quarter of the entire French and British fleets. This left the 8,000 man British Army at Yorktown surrounded by the 6,500 troops under Washington and Rochambeau, 5,000 French soldiers and marines from de Grasse's fleet, and the 4,500 Continentals and militia who were already in the area. After the largest siege operation of the American Revolution -- with more troops involved than at Boston MA, Savannah GA, or Charleston SC -- the allied armies accepted the surrender of the British army on October 19, 1781.
