The National Liberty Memorial -- Legislation in 2007

In March of 2007 bills were introduced into both houses of Congress (S. 1051 and H.R. 1693), " to authorize National Mall Liberty Fund D.C. to establish a memorial on Federal land in the District of Columbia at Constitution Gardens previously approved to honor free persons and slaves who fought for independence, liberty, and justice for all during the American Revolution."

This National Liberty Memorial will honor over 5,000 enslaved Americans and free persons of African descent who volunteered to serve as soldiers and sailors during the American Revolution plus thousands more who rendered civilian assistance that helped win the nation's independence.
