1772 October 10:  The Gaspee Affair An armed British revenue schooner was chasing a vessel suspected of avoiding tariffs when the schooner ran aground on Gaspee Point, seven miles south of Providence RI. A group of 64 men burned the vessel, but their identities were not determined officially until much later. This event made relations worse between Great Britain (who wanted to receive the taxes) and the colonists (who didn't want to pay them).

1774 October 10:  Point Pleasant (WV) -- A surprise attack on a colonial militia force sent from the Virginia coast to repel Indian raids was repulsed. This spared the lives of many militiamen for later duty during the American Revolution. In 1908 the U.S. Congress recognized the Battle of Point Pleasant as the first battle of the American Revolution.
