What Does the Government Ask Prospective Citizens?

ARE YOU READY TO BECOME A CITIZEN? Those of us who were born in the United States don't have to take a test in order to become a citizen. It is assumed that we will learn a lot about our nation as we go through school, that we will remember much of what we learned, and that throughout life we will update our knowledge from the news reports about current events that are important to our governance.

If that is true it should be easy for you pass the test that immigrants seeking citizenship must pass.
Try these old questions (100 of them) that the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will use until then end of 2007.
Try these new questions (142 of them) that will replace the old questions starting in 2008.

How did you do on each set? Which series do you think best captures what it means to be a U.S. citizen -- and why?

How well do you know the United States Constitution

Over 100 questions (with answers) are posted on the National Archives site. Some are useful for teaching and some are trivia questions for experts.

Several Sets of Multiple-choice Questions

Each set in the table below consists of a page with about ten multiple-choice questions, a JavaScript for checking the results against an answer key, and a page with the answer key and, for each question, a Web link or suggestion for finding out more about the question.

Teachers or others who would like to submit question sets should contact the Page Manager -- Ralph Nelson, at . Submitted sets may have an additional page to specify the range of material (outline) covered in the question set, the educational objectives of the questions, and the print or Web resources recommended for student use.

NOTE: The multiple-choice quizzes in the table below were written to test the concept and the software. They are not focused on specific topic areas and are not keyed to a set of objectives.
