This Web site is sponsored by the

National Society of the Sons of the

American Revolution (NSSAR),

whose Web site is at www.sar.org

The goals of the SAR are historic, patriotic, and educational, and we support them as noted below:

HONORING PATRIOTS PAST: Each year the SAR commemorates the events and patriots of the American Revolution by participating in several hundred public ceremonies, placing markers on several hundred patriot graves, placing flags on thousands of the graves of veterans from more recent wars, and providing color guards for several hundred public events.

HONORING PATRIOTS PRESENT: We honor the sacrifice of military personnel by providing assistance at dozens of veterans hospitals, and we annually recognize several hundred citizens or businesses for flying the U.S. flag regularly and properly.

RECOGNIZING CIVIC EXCELLENCE: We recognize excellence in public service through awards to citizens, officials, military personnel, and public service employees and volunteers through chapter, state, and national awards to about 1,600 youth and 500 adults annually.

RECOGNIZING YOUTH LEADERSHIP: We honor the leadership development and public service commitment of young people with awards to about 2,500 Eagle Scouts, 2,500 JROTC cadets (high school), 500 ROTC cadets (college), and one senior at each of the U.S. military service academies (Army: West Point, Navy: Annapolis, Air Force: Colorado Springs, Coast Guard: New London).

ENCOURAGING THE STUDY OF HISTORY: We encourage and recognize excellence in the study of history through youth contests, with prizes at the chapter, state, and national levels. Each year thousands of youth participate and hundreds win SAR awards through contests offered through our 330 chapters, 50 state societies, and the national society. These include grade-school poster contests, high school historic essay contests, historic oration contests, Eagle Scout essay contests, and JROTC essay contests. We also participate in and provide prizes at state and national History Day programs.

PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL: We educate our members, youth and the public through presentations, newsletter and magazine articles, books, and Web sites. Our members make presentations to hundreds of civic groups and write about several hundred historical articles annually. Since 2001 we have distributed to grade and high school teachers over 23,000 CDs on "America's Heritage: an Adventure in Liberty", with professionally-developed sets of lesson plans suitable for elementary, middle, and high school students. Supplemental material includes reading materials, projects, songs, and games based on themes of Freedom, Unity, Progress, and Responsibility.

INFORMING PEOPLE WORLD-WIDE VIA THE WEB: We have a national Web network made up of our national site, 50 state sites, and about 150 chapter sites. In addition to information on SAR organization and activities, these sites present historical information and educational resources on Revolutionary War documents, events, and people. In 2004 members and the public viewed over 1,200,000 text pages from this Web network. In 2005 much of the historical and educational material was moved to this new site.

The NSSAR is a lineage organization -- members are male descendants of patriots of the American Revolution. Since its start in 1890 over 160,000 men have joined, and over 27,000 are active members today in 330 chapters throughout the United States, France, Mexico, England, and several other nations.
